Reaching Excellence On and Off the Stage!

This past summer I experienced something that completely altered my viewpoint on life, and truly changed something deep down inside me, opening my eyes to something that I will never forget. For two weeks, I journeyed to Moshi, a village in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania with a group called GLA. Staying at their base, we did community service, as well as cultural exploration. Teaching at a primary school for two hours every morning, then helping with various activities around the school like fetching buckets of water from a river down a steep and rocky slope, and helping to build a kitchen, such was the daily life. What was most incredible for me was to see the joy and vibrant life these children exuded. Their school lacked proper windows, floors, walls and doors. They had little to write on, cracked blackboards, and sat three kids to a desk. No air conditioning, no electricity, and no running water. And that was only if you were lucky enough to go to school in the first place. It made me think about back home, how most children take their education for granted. We whine about school, we complain about how “old” our textbook may be, and I know, I’ve been guilty of doing these things. Yet, we are provided the grandest luxuries in comparison to these children, and act in such an immature, spoiled manner. Seeing how determined these kids were to go to school made me realize just how privileged I am, and how these children deserve so much more. Something particularly striking is that for the first week we taught, the students were on holiday. They did not even have to attend school! But they came, and they learned, and they worked, far more than can be said for students in America. Who would willingly go to school during spring break? The hallways always clear within minutes of the last bell. I’d like to think that I’ve matured, that I’ve changed, that I won’t complain about schoolwork and whatnot, but realistically, it is a unfortunate habit that will not see complete eradication any time soon. However, I hope that I can take this experience, and turn into something worthwhile for both myself, and the children, through spreading awareness and fundraising.

Tanzania was warm and welcoming, the people there were friendly and open, to both foreigners and each other. With greetings to strangers on the streets, it has made me realize how distant and foreign our society is in comparison. Granted, it is part of their cultural tradition to act as they do, and not ours, but it is exceedingly heartwarming to hear a friendly “Mambo!” every time I ventured out in exploration. The people work no less hard than you and I, perhaps even harder. My time there has made an impact on me in a way I can only begin to describe with words. I would go back in a heartbeat, and if one is seeking an opportunity to learn something new, and help someone else, there is nowhere better to begin than in Tanzania.
